Last Bit of SXSW Wrap-Up (1/3): Napalm Death, Motörhead, Tigercity, the Noisettes, Jens Lekman, Dizzee Rascal, and more
By Arielle Castillo At 04:22am Mar 18, 2008
So I’ve finally gotten a decent night’s sleep after getting back on Sunday from SXSW. And, while here in Miami, we have to start down the countdown to WMC (next Tuesday! Get excited)! I still wanted to wrap-up a summary of the live music I saw out in Texas. The actual event is such a circus that while I tried to blog daily, I gave up after the first day (which was intense from the get-go – you can read my summary of Wednesday, March 12, Day 1, here).Day 2, Thursday, March 13
Thursday was one of my busiest days, with a crazy array of genres, and both old and new acts represented.
There was a LOT of quality heavy music at SXSW this year, and Thursday got to an unbelievably, well, fucking awesome start: the Vice magazine/Scion metal party at Stubb’s, with doors opening at the very un-metal time of noon. Also, it was extremely sunny and hot – not good weather for black, or for leather. Didn’t matter to the crowd, which stretched two blocks deep by the time I got there, around 1 p.m. (and just after an abortive set by Norway’s black metal legends Enslaved, d’oh! Not sure why they were cut off early).

Over The Weekend: SXSW Edition with Vampire Weekend, Motorhead, The Black Keys
By Chelsea Mueller At 03:27am Mar 17, 2008
It should come as no surprise this weekend we were at SXSW down in Austin. To get a full feel for the annual music fest you can read our national blog or flip through our local coverage of the event, but here are a few highlights to get things going.Vampire Weekend
After debating it, getting shit from you guys for debating it and getting a tarot reading saying he needed to go Pete caved and went to see Vampire Weekend. Turns out, great decision. Bonus: Pete should be adding some mp3s from the packed Friday night show at Antone's to DC-9 today.
Motorhead
I was very excited when I saw Motorhead on the schedule to play a free afternoon party on Thursday. So, let's just say I was pretty pissed when a couple hours beforehand I got tripped and broke my big toe. I still walked down to Stubb's to see the band, and the pain was very much worth it. Lemmy and Co. blew me and hundreds of others away. I won't tell you not to feel bad about missing it, but you can feel a little better about it by listening to DC-9's recording of Motorhead playing “Killers” at the show.
The Black Keys
So, it's no shocker than both Pete and I were at the Village Voice Media day party Friday afternoon. We work for them. However, we couldn't help but share how awesome The Black Keys were at the shindig. If you need proof, I happen to have a live song up for your aural pleasure.

MP3: Motorhead - "Killers" (Live)
By Chelsea Mueller At 08:32am Mar 14, 2008

Disappointed that you didn't make it to see Motorhead on Thursday afternoon? Can't blame you. But make yourself feel a little better by listening to the band play "Killers" at yesterday's show. Turning the speakers all the way up is required. -- Chelsea Ide

Motorhead at SXSW
By Chelsea Mueller At 08:52pm Mar 13, 2008
Motorhead. Fucking Motorhead. The hard rock* Brits with the gravelly-voiced bassist Lemmy Kilmister for a frontman took to Stubb's Thursday afternoon and annihilated every song with the same vigor they surely had in the late '70s. Lemmy even joked, "Sorry, that one's from 1976." It was enlightening to see the sea of people clad in Deicide, Children of Bodom and Melvins shirts at the show. After catching a few metal and hardcore bands last night, it felt like no metal fans were at SXSW. Turns out, they were just holding out for metal* royalty.
