Bonus MP3: Vampire Weekend -- "M79 (Live at Antone's - SXSW 2008)"
By Pete Freedman At 12:35pm Mar 18, 2008
[So we decided to try our hand at some live recording this weekend at South by Southwest. We did it on the same equipment we tape our interviews on, so the quality ain't gonna blow you away. But the crowd noise and whatnot do make these taped versions pretty fun in our book. Enough reading. Knock yourself out and download that sucker. -- Pete Freedman]Vampire Weekend -- "M79 (Live at Antone's - SXSW 2008)"

Over The Weekend: SXSW Edition with Vampire Weekend, Motorhead, The Black Keys
By Chelsea Mueller At 03:27am Mar 17, 2008
It should come as no surprise this weekend we were at SXSW down in Austin. To get a full feel for the annual music fest you can read our national blog or flip through our local coverage of the event, but here are a few highlights to get things going.Vampire Weekend
After debating it, getting shit from you guys for debating it and getting a tarot reading saying he needed to go Pete caved and went to see Vampire Weekend. Turns out, great decision. Bonus: Pete should be adding some mp3s from the packed Friday night show at Antone's to DC-9 today.
Motorhead
I was very excited when I saw Motorhead on the schedule to play a free afternoon party on Thursday. So, let's just say I was pretty pissed when a couple hours beforehand I got tripped and broke my big toe. I still walked down to Stubb's to see the band, and the pain was very much worth it. Lemmy and Co. blew me and hundreds of others away. I won't tell you not to feel bad about missing it, but you can feel a little better about it by listening to DC-9's recording of Motorhead playing “Killers” at the show.
The Black Keys
So, it's no shocker than both Pete and I were at the Village Voice Media day party Friday afternoon. We work for them. However, we couldn't help but share how awesome The Black Keys were at the shindig. If you need proof, I happen to have a live song up for your aural pleasure.

What It Was Like: Basia Bulat, Foreign Born, Vampire Weekend, DeVotchKa, Robyn
By Pete Freedman At 09:31am Mar 15, 2008

Is it possible that Robyn's Friday night set was even better than Vampire Weekend's? Don't laugh! (Pete Freedman)
So the all the hype caught up with me tonight; after fighting it and fighting it, I decided to give in to Vampire Weekend. Catching Helio Sequence during the day had something to do with it. So did those darn tarot cards. So was it worth it? Well, here's What It Was Like on Friday night...
Band: Basia Bulat, a Canadian Americana outfit with decent lead vocals.
Where: Antone's
What It Was Like: Like if the Dixie Chicks were more rootsy and if their vocals were trembly like Stevie
Verdict: Not bad. But not great either. Here's the deal: If Basia Bulat were a band from Dallas, I'd probably dig them after a while--they sound like the type of act that grows on you. But for a Canadian act that, as the lead singer said, had never been to Texas before, it's not worth investing your time in them. Their set was decent, but not good enough to say that booking agents around the region are gonna be running around trying to get them to come this way again. If you're dying for female Americana or Texas Swing, check out Burleson's Quebe Sisters.
Random Note: You have to give the Basia Bulat folks credit for playing to their crowd. At one point, the band covered Austin legend Daniel Johnston's "True Love Will Find You In The End."
